Guide tO SECURING TOOLS

HOW TO SECURE YOUR TOOLS WHILE WORKING AT HEIGHTS

When you are working at heights, it is important that your tools are secured to prevent them from dropping down on your colleague who is working on the ground. But how do you secure your tools and which solutions exist?

HOW DO FALL PROTECTED
TOOLS WORK?

The tools are fastened to you with a lanyard – whether it is on your belt, your harness, bag or even your wrist is up to you. There are different solutions for you to choose between in order to find the right match for your task and working method. In order to hook up the lanyard to the tools, a D-ring, for example, is attached to the tools providing the carabiner on the lanyard something to fasten upon. Thus, it is not necessary that the tools originally are designed with a fixing point. This can easily be mounted afterwards by use of different solutions such as a D-ring tool strap or a Quick Spin, which is mounted with Quick Wrap tape.

DO EACH TOOL NEED TO BE SECURED WITH A LANYARD?

As a starting point, you only need one lanyard which is attached to, for instance, a box wrench, but if you use other tools, you must store them in a secure bag. After this, when you want to change to e.g. a flash light, you detach the lanyard from the hammer and attach it to the flash light while keeping your hand in the bag all the time. In that way, you can work with a single lanyard without compromising your safety.

USE A TOOL HOLSTER FOR FREQUENT CHANGES

If you know in advance that you will be using several tools, it can be an advantage to secure each tool with a lanyard. Again, there are various solutions. You can, for instance, use a coil tether, a strap or tool holster from 3M, if it is only small tools. This holster has a line with automatic retraction – also called retraction. The line automatically retracts, keeping the line and tools in place. Furthermore, the holster features a Quick-Mag technology, which is a magnetic system that enables you to fasten the tools quickly, so that you have the tools right at your hand and in the right position. In that way, your workflow can be optimised, since the number of times the tools must be put in the holster is reduced.

DROPPED OBJECTS PREVENTION –
SUITABLE FOR MORE THAN TOOLS

Small tools as well as big tools can be secured at heights, but also following objects can be secured:

  • Phone
  • Camera
  • Spray bottle
  • Flashlight
  • Battery for a drilling machine
  • and many other

That way you can secure almost everything, you need when working at heights.
